Gianluigi Donnarumma - GK - OVR 83 The first of two selected IFs which already have a ridiculous amount of IFs is Donnarumma. Yet again, the Italian showed why he is one of the best up and coming keepers in the world with a brilliant performance between the sticks to keep his clean sheet intact, saving a penalty in the process and claiming an 8/10 match rating from Gazzetta.
David Alaba - LB - OVR 85 Another title race that went down to the wire, and another that ended up with the favourites winning. Bayern secured yet another title with a comfortable 5-1 home win over Frankfurt. It was a brilliant team performance to close out the title, but Alaba in particular impressed, scoring once and assisting another from LB.
Thilo Kehrer - CB - OVR 79 It's rare that when a side wins 4-0 that a CB without any goal contributions stands out, but it Kehrer's case as he managed to pick up MOTM, which shows just how good he was this weekend. PSG fans have a lot to look forward to in the future.
Junior Firpo - LWB - OVR 75 Real Madrid has been in turmoil for parts of this season, and it was another disappointing result for them while hosting Betis with the away side coming away with a 2-0 win. Firpo looks set to pick up the IF from the match after providing an assist and helping towards the clean sheet.
Fabian - LM - OVR 81 Annoyingly, Gazzetta only awarded Fabian the average rating of 7/10, but with the Spaniard scoring twice and assisting another in a 4-1 win, I simply can't ignore him despite his not picking up the official MOTM award. Italy was by far the most difficult for selections, which only increases the chance of Fabian for me.
Rodrigo Javier De Paul - CM - OVR 77 Continuing with the theme of Gazzetta's harsh scoring, we have De Paul, who once again was given the modest score of a 7/10. But with three assists to his name, I don't feel that he will be overlooked. As a result of De Paul's assists, Udinese went on to win, 3-2.
Memphis Depay - CAM - OVR 84 The first of two big names I have selected from Ligue 1 is Memphis Depay. With the joint highest rating of the week when it comes to L'Equipe, Depay was awarded an 8/10 and looks set to make it. Playing in a CAM role, the Dutch talent managed to score twice during a 4-0 Lyon win.
Paulinho - CAM - OVR 85 The CSL has been snubbed time and time again so far this FIFA, but with leagues beginning to finish, I can see them picking up a fair few over the next couple of months. We start things off with a very decent IF in Paulinho, after he picked up both a goal and an assist.
Nicolas Pepe - RM - OVR 79 Could we be about to see yet another Pepe IF ahead of TOTS? I am potentially pushing it here with the Ivorian picking up his last IF five weeks ago. But with the Headliner dynamic item influence, alongside the fact we are without the Prem this week, could mean we see him included as a big name. Pepe added another two to his tally during Lille's 5-0 home win over Angers.
Haris Seferovic - ST - OVR 73 Another title that was decided on the final day of the season was in the Portuguese league with Benfica's seventh consecutive win allowing them to deny Porto the chance of catching them. The latest came via a 4-1 home win over Santa Clara, with Seferovic scoring two of those four goals.
Wout Weghorst - ST - OVR 77 There is an outside chance of Weghorst making the Bundesliga TOTS and as a result, would end up missing out on his TIF. But just as Schar, I expect him to narrowly miss out and thus make TOTW instead. He gets the nod after scoring three and assisting another in Wolfsburg's 8-1 demolition of Augsburg.
Bill Hamid - GK - OVR 74 Leagues such as MLS often thrive when other leagues start dropping, and there are several which could easily feature this week. One of those is former US international Bill Hamid, who in total made an impressive 12 saves to keep his clean sheet. With no clear goalkeeping options outside of Donnarumma, I can see him making the cut despite being a NIF Silver.
Mantovani - CB - OVR 75 There were a lot of contenders from defence from La Liga, but Mantovani stands out after managing to score twice for Huesca in a 2-1 win. He also scored the third. but that was in his own net. Regardless of that, with a perfect three-star performance from MARCA, I expect him to feature.
Morgan Sanson - CM - OVR 80 Although teammate Sakai managed a goal and an assist from RB, Thauvin had two goals and an assist from RM. L'Equipe actually awarded him MOTM with an 8/10 for his goal. Bizarrely, Thauvin was one of the worst with a 6/10. L'Equipe is usually a good indication of who will be getting IFs from France though, and I expect the same again here as per usual.
Alexandre Golovin - CM - OVR 79 This is probably the final chance EA is going to have to finally give a boost to Golovin's OTW item, and with it being so late in the domestic season portion of the game, I can see it finally coming. The Russian managed a goal and an assist in Monaco's 2-0 home win, seeing him claim a 7/10 from L'Equipe.
Djaniny - ST - OVR 77 There have been a few players from the Saudi division which have been racking up the IFs, and Djaniny is another of those. The Cape Verde striker added another three goals to his tally during a 5-0 home win, which looks set to allow him to pick up his third IF.
Nils Petersen - ST - OVR 79 With the Premier League not in action, it was helpful that the Bundesliga delivered and I expect multiple IFs to come from the league as a result. Petersen scored twice and assisted another during Freiburg's 5-1 home win over Nurnberg.
Lucas Alario - ST - OVR 79 The final week in Germany saw goal after goal. Leverkusen was another to get five plus, during a 5-1 win over Hertha, Alario scored three of those five goals, helping the side clinch Champions League football in the process and thus making him a near certainty for this week's side.
Baris Atik - CAM - OVR 64 It's been a while since I have included a Bronze NIF in a prediction, but Atik looks set to change that after he scored three from CAM in Dresden's 3-1 home win. The result almost threw Paderborn out of an automatic promotion spot.
Cody Cooke - ST - OVR 58 Another potential IF from a Bronze item now after another hat trick was scored, this time over in Scotland with St. Mirren coming away win a 3-2 win thanks to three goals from Cody Cooke.
Robert Beric - ST - OVR 75 Should EA's selection follow the route of this prediction, Beric would be the sixth Ligue 1 selection, which could be seen as excessive. But they all have a reason to be there, and with L'Equipe handing out several 8s, they become more and more difficult to ignore. Beric was another player with an 8 to his name, which he claimed for his brace in St. Etienne's win.
Chris Wondolowski - ST - OVR 70 Just weeks after the first few Record Breaker items were released this FUT, we look set to have another. This time after the man known as Wondo managed to break the all-time MLS goalscoring record, previously set by Landon Donovan. Not only did the Earthquakes talisman manage to break the record, but he did so in style, scoring four goals San Jose's 4-1 win over Chicago taking him to a career total of 148 goals and smashing the previous high of 145.
Yannick Gomis - ST - OVR 67 Lens managed to secure a promotion playoff spot on the final day of the season with a 5-2 home win over Orleans. Gomis helped to ensure that was the case with three of those goals being from the boot of the Senegalese striker.
Chris Wondolowski - ST - OVR 70 Just weeks after the first few Record Breaker items were released this FUT, we look set to have another. This time after the man known as Wondo managed to break the all-time MLS goalscoring record, previously set by Landon Donovan. More and more people are starting to play FIFA 19 competitively, which means reaching the top 100 is getting more difficult with time. Even if you’re far from reaching that mark, be sure to follow our FIFA 19 FUT Champions Tips if you’re considering the idea of participating in this competition. This way you might be able to go a little further.
How can you win more games?
Everyone who’s playing FUT Champions is competitive by nature: they wish to be better than their friends, they want a chance to play against the best players in the world, reach a legendary streak of 30 wins or simply prove to themselves that this is where they belong: amongst the most brilliant players. However, not being able to fulfill those objectives, which most people aren’t, can be very frustrating. Keep in mind, though, that if you’ve just started playing FIFA and have absolutely no skill whatsoever, this won’t help you go very far. But there are a few very simple tricks you may be taking for granted that can get you lots of wins. These are the FIFA 19 FUT Champions Tips we’re bringing you in this guide. Since this is a long guide and we don’t want you to miss the better ones (not even the worst ones!), here they are, from most to least important.
Let’s start with the most important of the FIFA 19 FUT Champions Tips. In most major FIFA tournaments, the most decisive factor is the player’s state of mind. Their hands are just there to cause an impulse. Success depends directly on one’s capacity to control their emotions and keep their concentration.
Mental concentration is a psychic process which consists in voluntarily focusing one’s attention on the activity they’re performing at the moment, leaving aside all that can interfere. Which means that not only you must be physically and mentally able, but it’s also very important that you cut out external factors, anything that’s not related to the game. It’s not easy being 100% focused during 30 consecutive games, but if you follow our recommendations, you’ll surely be able to increase your concentration capacity and so win more often.
☑️ Play alone
Start by choosing an environment private enough for you to be relaxed and quiet enough so that it’s not likely for you to be interrupted. No one else being present would be ideal. Your chances of victory reduce drastically if someone is constantly blocking your vision or if you’re holding a conversation with them whilst playing. If you’re unlucky enough to be presented with a flash mob, your chances are almost zero. If being alone is not a possibility, consider playing some other time. Even if you have a room of your own, your concentration will only remain unaffected if you’re absolutely sure no one will interrupt you at any time.
☑️ Eliminate all potential sources of distraction
Relax, no one’s asking you to get rid of your mum, your girlfriend, wife or kids! We say it figuratively. In order for you to engage with the game, we suggest you silent all your devices that might give you sound notifications, such as smartphones, tablets or even messages in your console. It is also important to ensure you reduce all movements that are in your field of vision and are not related to the game, such as a television or a laptop. If you’re expecting someone’s visit, make sure you have enough time to play a full game or finish the current one until they arrive.
☑️ Improve your concentration capacity
The way we’re able to ignore all that doesn’t interest us varies from one person to another. Do you ever arrive at your destination without really knowing how you got there? We bet so. This type of robotized behaviour will not get you far in FUT Champions. You may even be able to score goals but you’ll be playing far below your capacity. If this is something that happens to you regularly, maybe it’s time you worked on your concentration capacity. It can be improved by meditation or by playing unimportant games. If you look on the internet, you will find dozens of examples. You may also try to improve it whilst playing FUT Champions itself, adopting a series of active play actions: look for open spaces in the radar, predict the opposition’s moves, think your plays through before executing them and be original with your own playing style. The busier your brain is with the game, the less likely it will enter automatic mode.
☑️ Occupy your ears with predictable sounds
The fans’ cheering and other sounds of the stadium are reproduced in FIFA 19 as a way of keeping you engaged with the game. They were projected in order to increase your adrenaline levels, which is something that you should avoid. For some people, the game’s commentators can be annoying. It is, therefore, recommended that you come up with your own techniques in order to hear only the sounds you consider neutral. If you can’t avoid environments where distractions are everywhere, muting the game might not be sufficient. In these cases, we recommend you put on headphones and listen to some classical music or even white noise. Other types of music of your preference are also fine as long as they keep yourself calm, focused and don’t have much singing in them. If your opponent has audio on, resist the urge to hear them and apply the same technique. It’s hard to maintain posture when things start to go wrong and along with that listen to provocations. Playing ‘I will survive’ is not an option.
Along the years, by observing some of the best players in the world, we could see that state of mind plays an extremely important role. Knowing how to control your emotions is crucial for success.
Maybe for knowing that they must be prepared to play many games in a short period of time, FUT Champions competitors normally consider adrenaline a good thing. However, this can be a mistake that will cost a lot. In moments of stress, your adrenal glands release great quantities of this hormone which prepares your organism for major physical efforts. It also stimulates the heart, raises the blood pressure, relaxes certain muscles and contracts others. It’s true that adrenaline helps us make faster decisions and gives us an impulse in our motor capacity. It speeds up decision making but that doesn’t necessarily mean the right decision will be made. We become more capable of running and jumping, but that doesn’t really interest us FIFA players. Also known as epinephrine, it limits our motor coordination, essential for giving instructions to the game through the pressing of buttons. If you wish to improve your success rate, you have to leave adrenaline aside. Here are a few simple FIFA 19 FUT Champions Tips that will help keep yourself calm:
☑️ Don’t lose your temper
Just because you watch Youtubers yelling, you don’t have to follow their bad example. They do it a lot because it’s good for the audience, not because they think this leads them to more victories. Well, actually some of them are just stupid. The idea that by shouting a bunch of curse words you will let your emotions out and that’s somehow beneficial is wrong. By yelling you’re simply elevating your adrenaline levels and that, as we’ve explained, only works against you. If you feel you have an urge to yell, it means you’re not psychologically able to play. So, in this case, try saving it for later. Besides, if your opponent gets offended they may report you and you will be penalized. By treating them with respect, you’ll be contributing to a calm environment, which means less adrenaline is involved. Do you see how this works?
☑️ Make a pause whenever you concede a goal
Have you ever conceded a goal and just wanted to restart the game ASAP to level it up and not give your opponent any time to celebrate? Of course, you have. It happens to every single human being, even if they don’t play FIFA. We bet you skip every replay until the ball is back running and in your possession. This feeling of revenge is no more than adrenaline taking over. What you should do is the exact opposite: every time you concede, you should stop for a bit and take all the time that is given to you. Taking a deep breath or having a sip of water can be enough for your body to let go of all the tension and go back to its normal state. If by the end of that pause you’re still not feeling calm, which happens frequently when you concede ridiculous goals, pause again. Do remember that you may only pause a total of three times during the match, so it’d be really best not to concede so many goals.
☑️ Play with a sense of humour
When things aren’t going well, laughing is the best medicine. Even if it’s a simulation; it doesn’t have to be true. That can affect your state of mind and even induce some physical alterations: the endorphin levels being released by your brain increase, giving you more confidence and diminishing anxiety; blood circulation is stimulated, so your muscles relax more easily, reducing some of the physical symptoms of stress. If you’re already mentally strong, you won’t really need to resort to this trick, but the truth is that laughing at unfortunate times or events such as your opponent’s celebrations is probably the best way to deal with them. Instead of holding on to negativity, you will be immediately ready to the rest of the game. Do that and see what happens. Although it’s a simulation at first, the objective here is to laugh as naturally as possible, so don’t go on impersonating the Joker, I’m afraid that won’t do the job. With practice, this can become something almost spontaneous and soon enough it’ll be decisive for the way you approach the game. You’ll be able to deal with adversity more easily as this won’t result in adrenaline kicking in.
Some people need to establish certain objectives in order to feel challenged and motivated. It wasn’t just coincidence that EA introduced a new game mode to us in FIFA 19. Objectives tend to make players go a little further and do more things in the end. What’s interesting about a game in which you’ve scored 6 goals if you weren’t challenged to make, say, two of them from headers? In FUT Champions it’s also important to set goals. They serve as the basis for work in your performance. When you’re able to fulfil them, or each time you break a personal record, you naturally get motivated. If you fail, you keep trying until you succeed. The important thing is that you set goals that are realistic and at the same time don’t lack a minimum of ambition.
Of course, everyone’s main goal in a competition will always be to win as many games as they can. Nothing else matters. Any other goal you may come to set will only take away your focus from what really matters: winning. The thing is that most people judge themselves as better players than they really are. They set high objectives, such as reaching the top 100, and find themselves emotionally affected for never fulfilling that. They keep justifying failures and never really admit the true cause: they were never good enough to beat the opposition. They blame handicap (independently of whether it does or doesn’t exist – that’s not our point), they blame the game’s bugs, bad luck, they blame the lack of fair game or even the referee sometimes. Our brain is a specialist at finding justifications for the situations we consider unexpected, but it’s not always the right one it finds.
If you’re realistic and accept that most of your losses happened due to the fact that the opposition was superior, which does not necessarily have to happen since football is not exactly a science, you automatically let go of all that toxic mentality. After all, you might as well be a great player, but you are facing the best players. When you justify a failure with excuses, you’re not only being dishonest with yourself, but you’re also losing focus and increasing your levels of irritability. And it’s like a snowball. The next time you lose a game under similar circumstances, your brain automatically comes to the conclusion that it’s not your fault, you lost because of that thing you told yourself the last time (which not even you completely believe in). This type of behaviour is very dangerous because it prevents you from seeing the evidence. If you’re not realistic, you’ll never learn from your mistakes because it was never your fault in the first place.
The Weekend League is more like a marathon rather than a speed test. You don’t get any kind of reward for finishing your round on Friday (actually you do earn a free weekend for yourself, which is something FUT Champions competitors don’t have). It’s quite the opposite, really. Your performance won’t be as good as it would be if you took the rest of the weekend to play your games patiently. Leaving everything for the last day is also not a good idea because that can cause a lot of stress. If you have three days to play, why lump everything into a single day? The thought of there being a determined moment when you’re more likely to face weak opponents is invalid. There’s no proof that shows matchmaking will work in your favor depending on which day you’re playing.
Our suggestion is that you distribute your games throughout the three days. Ideally, play 15 games on Friday, 15 on Saturday and 10 on the last day. Also, don’t play more than 10 games in a row. Like at any other rigorous mental activity, your brain will get tired of being forced to function for such a long period of time (yes, because if you really are focused on the game, it means you’re overloading your brain). When you accumulate many games played in a row, your attacks become more predictable and easy to defend against. You should take a break and restart when your energy is fully restored.
Don’t forget to consider each game as a final and always play for the result. Unless you’re losing by 5 or more, and in that case we have a lasagna recipe to share, don’t get intimidated or give up. If you start thinking about the next game as soon as you concede the second goal, you’ll be losing focus and increasing your stress levels.
We all lose games and, although some of us can be more self-controlled than others, it’s always difficult to deal with losses. Keep in mind that the worst thing you could do is go back to playing right after a loss. You have to understand that this isn’t the time to try and compensate your recent pain. You’re frustrated, full of adrenaline and you’re hungry for revenge. These are the exact ingredients that will most likely make you lose again. It’s often difficult to let go of this cycle: you stack up loss after loss, and so decide to play just one more game because you’re tired and the one thing you want is to go to sleep under the comfort of one last win. This is where we see who really has the potential to reach the top and who are those that don’t have the required mental structure.
Every time you lose a match, make a quick pause. Use that time to go trading, eat something, go to the toilet, make a phone call or look at few more photos of Emilia Clarke on the internet. If you lost by conceding a dreadful goal, known as ‘eSports ready’, best give it a few more minutes. The objective is that you reset your mind to its normal state: focused, calm and relaxed. Ideally, you should be able to make a pause after every game, even when you win, in order to have it reset. But pausing at least after every loss is crucial if you intend to go far in the competition. Don’t go placing the blame on whichever factor you believe is bringing you down other than yourself, because that won’t help at all. Let go of the anger and resume action as soon as you feel relaxed again.
We don’t suggest you sleep during a game. There are no records of such kind of skill, no Elite player has ever won a match whilst being asleep. One thing at a time: first sleep, then play. It is true that playing 30 games in 72 hours may implicate having to lose some sleep, but what good is playing all these games if you’re not going to win? Especially at night, don’t extend your play time if you feel tired. Sleep at least 7 hours. The lack of sleep affects you negatively in a lot of ways. When you don’t get enough sleep, your brain’s emotional zones become 60% more active, which can cause some inadequate reactions and emotions. Besides, anxiety levels increase and your capacity to process complex problems diminishes, which means you become more predictable. If you sleep less than 4 hours, you lose up to 7% of your reaction capacity, which in a game of FIFA makes all the difference. As if all that wasn’t enough, the habit of under-sleeping correlates with shorter life expectancy. A shorter life time means fewer months of FUT Champions. In other words, less red IF cards. Now you see where the problem is, right?
If your eyelids start to feel heavy but you’re running out of time to play your games, go for a short nap. The lack of sleep generates cortisol in your body, in other words, the stress hormone. By taking a nap, you’re giving your body the opportunity to produce the antidote for cortisol, which fights stress and anxiety. It is also responsible for the increase of serotonin in your brain, which provokes a good feeling of disposition, which is great for controlling your emotions during a harder match. Your power nap should last about 20 minutes. If you nap for longer than that your body enters a stage of deep sleep and it’s harder to wake, so you may feel disoriented and unable to play afterwards. This way it’s important that you set your alarm for 20 minutes after how long you think it takes for you to actually fall asleep. If you suffer from insomnia or any sleep disorder, note that naps are contraindicated.
…and don’t forget to breathe. This tip may seem way too obvious but you must be aware of its importance. When you’re playing FUT Champions, you want all your body, especially your brain, to be completely focused on the game. However, you cannot forget that it’s a machine and like any other machine it requires energy. Providing for its basic needs is the least you could do if you wish to have it work perfectly.
ESports athletes are starting to realise that, in order to maximise their capacity, they must treat their body as if they were traditional athletes. It isn’t just a coincidence that they all bring energetic drinks and foods (bars etc) into competitions. The top athlete’s average diet consists of 6 to 7 meals a day, corresponding to a total of 2500 calories. Obviously, in your case you don’t have take it that seriously. Don’t forget to eat if you play for long periods of time and keep your mind fresh with regular physical exercise. Dehydration, which occurs when your body uses up or loses more liquid than you ingest, results in physical and mental fatigue. You must avoid these situations by drinking water every once in a while. Ideally you should keep a water bottle nearby and have a sip every time you want to relax. If you drink big quantities at once, your bladder might get full and end up interrupting you in the wrong time.
If you’re able to open the score, remember that the opposition will do anything to level it up. You shouldn’t change your play style, after all, that’s what got you an advantage. There are, however, a few adjustments you can make in order to guarantee you’ll remain with an advantage.
Knowing how to read your opponent is a great virtue. It allows you to intercept their passes more often. Most players can’t deal with that type of game very well. Sooner or later, they end up losing patience and making mistakes, especially when losing the game. In order to get that reaction from them, you’ll have to defend with all your players, attackers included. Since they’ll be running out of stamina more quickly and staying out of position more often, have other tall, strong fast players on your bench in order to make substitutions in the second half. You’ll be losing attack power but, as time passes, this won’t matter much. In FUT Champions, goal difference doesn’t matter, winning is winning.
Adopting a posture of holding onto the result at all costs might be risky if there’s lots of time left. However, 20 minutes away from full-time seems enough to start doing so. That is, by the way, a good time to make some alterations on your team:
☑️ Change to defensive mode
When the opposition is playing at ultra attacking, you should respond adequately. Do hold them as much as you see fit. We suggest you to move the D-Pad until you find a defensive game plan you previously have saved.
☑️ Crowd you midfield
It doesn’t take much tactics knowledge to know that the line of restraint (the first defensive line) is located on the midfield. It’s responsible to recover the ball as soon as the opposition gains possession in the midfield. This way you should crowd the midfield, keeping it tight. Besides having the possibility of changing the formation you’re using, you can instruct your central midfielders and fullbacks not to attack. The midfield will become even more compact if you change tactics to counter-attack.
☑️ Make the right subs
At this point in a match it’s important to have some fresh legs. If you notice one of your players is too tired, use a substitution. If you’re bringing in an attacking player, choose one who’s fast and has good ball control, in case you want to use counter attacks. Defensively, bringing in defenders isn’t always the best option. Sometimes it’s best to have more defensive midfielders capable of winning the ball and so keeping it away from your goal.
Some of the FIFA 19 FUT Champions Tips can be controversy. That’s the case of this one. Time wasting isn’t pretty, but in FUT Champions you need to be pragmatic. If you’re winning or feeling confident to take the dispute into a penalty shootout, this can be a plausible option. The clock always works in favor of the player who has the score advantage. However, it’s important to know what you’re doing. The average player constantly loses the ball when passing it amongst his the defensive players and, most of the times, they suffer the unwanted consequences. Besides not being able to win, they feel humiliated and ashamed for not having been able to hold the score in a match that seemed pretty much decided in their favor. If you’re an experienced player you should try and taunt the opposition and, in the moment they’re most exposed, apply an unexpected counterattack to decide the match.
When the opposition has possession, try to stop their progression. If your players haven’t received any yellow cards yet, abuse of sliding tackles (aiming for the ball, obviously, and avoiding the ones from the back). Worst case scenario, your player will be booked and the game resumed afterwards (plus, you even get some extra time). By the way, set pieces are great for time wasting, on both sides actually. When you’re given a foul, waste as much time as possible. If you’re on your side of the pitch, short pass the ball to one of your free players in the back. If you’re on the opposition’s side of the pitch, change the free kick view mode and pass the ball to one of your wide players that seem to be unmarked and able to protect the ball without problems. If you feel like you won’t be able to keep possession, don’t be afraid to kick the ball forward. After all, a counterattack by the opposition at this point might ruin everything for you. When the end is approaching, take corners with a short pass calling for a player and shield the ball at least until your team is back in position.
When we talk about time wasting, the first thing that comes to most people’s mind is bringing the ball back on their side of the pitch. Yes, it’s important to keep possession, this gives the opposition fewer chances to score. However, defenders don’t usually have good passing and ball control so you should try and keep it as far from your own goal as possible. The corner is the community’s favorite place to hold the ball at, but although there’s a chance you’ll get a corner, there’s also a chance you’ll be exposed in case the opposition steals the ball from you. That happens because your fullbacks tend to support your attacks, leaving the sides unprotected. If you really wish to waste time, use the 40 meters immediately behind.
If you don’t know how to improve your game, maybe it’s time you learned from the best. It’s true this might require many hours of observation, but this is the only way you’ll realize what it is exactly you’re doing wrong. Both in real life and in FIFA 19, football is becoming more tactical and less technical. If you’ve qualified for the Weekend League, that means you’re an above average player. It means you already have the technics.
There are a few good Youtubers that are also good players who can teach you some tricks in order for you to improve your game. However, really, the best place to learn from is the Champion Channel. This feature was introduced in FIFA 19 and allows you to watch games played by the top 100 players. Try to comprehend their squads’ tactical disposition and mainly the cause of each goal. As good as a player can get, there is always a mistake for every goal conceded. Find out what they are to avoid making them yourself and maybe even induce your opponent. If you wish not to spend so much time, you can jump directly to the highlights of every game in order to carefully analyze each bit you consider important, using the tools available such as pause, speed and camera angle.
The Champions Channel can effectively help you, but don’t overuse it. If you keep watching games and end up not completing your 30 games by the end of the 72 hours, certainly you won’t be improving.
It’s almost cruel to ask this of someone who is already spending a whole weekend striving to be able to complete 30 games. However, it’s the truth. Practice makes perfect, and that’s what FUT Champions is all about. If you’re planning on becoming a better player, you have to know the game from inside out. First, you need to master all the commands. Only then, you will have the aptitude to execute them when they need to be executed.
The best way to develop your skills as a player is, of course, playing skill games. The large majority of people consider these games a less fun way of spending their time and therefore underrate them. The truth is that they have nothing to do with what they used to be a few years back. Skill Games are becoming more and more important for people who are starting to learn the mechanics of FIFA. This year new challenges have been included, which will surely teach many people a lot of things.
Amongst the several games there are, do give special attention to the ones relatively to marking and advanced penalties. These are particularly crucial in FUT Champions, especially when the game is leveled. Of course, the opposition’s skill level counts, too, but if you’re not able to deal with penalties well (both in the role of goalkeeper and scorer), you’ll certainly lose games you could at least have a chance to win. You don’t want to be the Roberto Baggio from the console, do you?
Unfortunately, EA don’t release statistics relatively to your Weekend League performance. This is, by the way, something the community has been asking quite persistently. This is only surpassed by the parents who ask us to explain how their children can use their credit card to buy FIFA Points. People would like to have access to things such as their match history, ball possession rate or the number of shots on target. The alternative we have is taking notes of what’s important at the end of each game or simply screenshots. If you have a thing for statistical analysis, you could try and correlate some data in an interesting way. Does your possession decrease after a few games in a row? When do you usually concede more goals? How many were from long shots? Is it worth keeping your defenders in line? The conclusions you’ll potentially come to can be important for you to realize where it is that you’re failing and what you have to do to succeed more often.
In case you’re frustrated with a series of losses in a row and can’t help but blame EA for your misery, it may be useful to take a look at notes from a time when you were in the opposite situation. It’s much easier to remember the bad than the good moments.

Ultimate Team is a game mode that has everything to do with YOUR team. You don’t just gather a bunch of good players. It’s important that they complement each other and fit your philosophy. Don’t be afraid to assume your identity on the pitch. It’s what brought you here. Don’t change the rhythm you’re used to just because it’s different from your opponent’s. The more like you, the better. After all, practice makes perfect. We’re not saying you shouldn’t be original. We’re just suggesting that you work on what you’re already good at, keeping yourself inside your comfort zone.
All you’ll need is a team built by you and for you. Don’t bother copying others. They weren’t projected taking your needs into account. There aren’t two people that play FIFA exactly the same way. You shouldn’t change your style according to which players ended up in your squad. It should go exactly the other way: pick players according to the weaknesses you think should be taken care of and the qualities you think you have. A player with higher rating isn’t always the one that fits your needs. Start by giving priority to regular cards and only upgrade to IF’s and special cards later on. If you want to boost your squad, buy FIFA Points as soon as you can. Also, don’t be a slave to chemistry. You should try and build good chemistry but that shouldn’t stop you from picking the players you think are a great fit for your team. For example, if you think Ronaldo should be your ST and you have enough coins to buy him, don’t give up just because he’s originally a LW.
When building your squad, prioritize having good defenders. Aside from being cheaper, they’re the true game changers. Any decent striker will score at some point. To avoid conceding, on the other hand, you’ll need some of the best centre-backs in the game. You’ll also need criteria to select your players for the substitute bench. If you’re really going for bronze benching, at least have two or three quality players you can count on during the match. As soon as all positions are occupied, it’s time to adjust your team according to your progress and play style. In this aspect, the chemistry styles, player instructions and mainly the custom tactics play a decisive role. Once again, we’re not going to extend ourselves around these themes because they depend too much on the way each person plays. Do spend a bit of time testing your squad outside of the competition, and so reduce the probability of making mistakes when you start playing for real.
Dealing with the players’ fatigue is part of your obligations. We suggest you don’t use players whose fitness levels are below 90 in a FUT Champions match. If you’re too exigent, avoid cards with fitness below 95. The trick is to define your strategy in advance. The easiest one, but also the most expensive, is the use of fitness cards. For people who don’t win a lot of games, this technique may result in a negative coin balance by the end of the competition. The most popular alternative consists of having a second team, the so-called fitness squad. Ideally, it should be almost as good as the main one and follow the same instructions and custom tactics, so you feel as little difference as possible. Whilst one team is playing, the other one rests in the bench, guaranteeing fresh players for the next match. With a bit of advanced thought, it’s also possible to do this rotation with just some of the most polyvalent players, which will only substitute the most tired ones and so allow the team to keep its original structure.
If you’re going to play another Weekend League round, you should previously equip yourself with contract cards. Normally they’re cheaper on Monday and more expensive on weekends, precisely at the exact time you need them most. Don’t make the mistake of having to buy them in the period between your games. Since you don’t have much time available to look for the best prices, you’re forced to pay what’s demanded at the time.
Don’t ever forget that you don’t play FUT Champions alone. There’s someone with legit expectations to win on the other side. Every bit of information you’re able to get from him can be used in your favor. When you’re looking at the opposing squad screen, take special attention to the formation they’re using. You don’t need to change yours in order to be effective, but at least you know what to expect. That is, by the way, a crucial factor: if you’re able to predict the opposition’s actions, the match is half won. Being predictable is one of the worst defects a FIFA player can have. This is why it’s acceptable for the first minutes of a game to be unexciting, the sides are still interpreting each other’s tactics. Also you should take notice of any particular card amongst their starting eleven that plays a highlighted role. If there is, there’s a good chance they’ll be using this player a lot, allowing you to predict some of the movements. Another relevant tip is to pause the game at least once in order to check out the opponent’s squad. That’s because many people happen to change their formation after the game starts.
Sometimes, you may recognise an opponent before the match begins. In case you know they’re a much better player than you, maybe it would be a good idea to propose a more defensive game based on counter attacks. If you’ve seen several games played by them, then you have the advantage: they know nothing about you, but you know about their weaknesses and qualities. Recently a few professional players have been justifying their losses with the fact that their matches are being broadcasted and so many people have access to their tactics. It is their videos and those of Renato Sanches counting 20 Euros notes.
It’s now time for the last of our FIFA 19 FUT Champions Tips. Everything counts for success, so do not neglect any detail. Almost every tip we gave here is obvious, but the truth is that many times these are the details players ignore. Make sure you have the perfect environment, free of obstacles.
Start by checking if the place you’re at is free of noises and distractions. Sit on a comfortable chair, one that maintains your back in the correct position. It doesn’t have to be a gaming chair, but avoid ones with an uncomfortable seat or that don’t have a backrest. Just like in the ‘127 Hours’ movie, it may be a good idea to have food and water nearby. If you play on PC, consider buying yourself a controller. If you’re on console, maybe get a spare one. By having two controllers, you guarantee you’ll always have one available whilst the other one is charging. One low battery notification at the top of the screen by itself can be enough to distract you, even when you know you can still finish the game before having to plug the charge cable in. Also, you should regularly check, when you are not playing FUT Champions, if it’s working properly.
Another important tip has to do with the lighting. You should prioritize natural lighting. Don’t keep it too bright, nor too dark. Eliminate all kinds of reflex (you already have the shadows of the stadiums to upset you!) and anticipate how the light behaves whilst you’re playing. Avoid TVs and monitors with reduced dimension and make sure they’re not over your eyes’ height. It is no less important that your internet connection is good and stable. Do everything you can to avoid lag, from using wired connection to the several tests we suggest you here.
Lastly, and in case money isn’t a concern for you, help the football players to pay their taxes. That, or make hardware and accessory upgrades. Buy a new controller, headphones or maybe a mouse pad. Whatever you think is most necessary. It’s amazing how gaming accessories have been selling, it proves many people don’t want to stay behind.
